Walleye Statue at First National Bank-Isle
The Walleye Statue at First National Bank-Isle, was removed March 6th for some much-needed repairs and restoration. The Isle Area Chamber of Commerce is spearheading the restoration and fundraising to cover the costs. In the past, the Fish Funds came from local businesses and individuals. The estimated total cost this time will be $11-12,000 plus or minus.
This is the Fish’s second restoration since its initial placement in Isle. Local Businesses and Individuals went together to fund the Fish decades ago…which was 1980 or before. There has been one restoration since then around the time the Bank expanded its office areas and the fish had to be moved to make room for that.
Larry Karpen of Hickory Lake Auto in Aitkin, will be managing the restoration. They also did the Garrison Fish Restoration in recent years. Larry, together with Jim Staricha, extracted the Fish onto a trailer for it’s ride to Aitkin and will replace it late Spring 2025. Our FISH has been featured in many online tourist writeups over the years, and will have even more exposure once it gets its Facelift.
Other Info: There will be a plaque at the base of the NEW FISH, reading “Thank you to Isle Area Businesses, Individuals, & Isle Area Chamber of Commerce for making this FISH possible.” We also hope to have some historic info on the plaque. The Chamber will do a Thank You feature in the Messenger, recognizing all donors, noting major donors first (but not the amounts donated). There will be a ribbon cutting event when our FISH comes back home.
If we raise more funds than needed for the FISH restoration, The Chamber will set some funds aside for future restoration and donate the surplus to the Isle Food Shelf and or other charities.
